Generous annual gifts that can be immediately applied provide flexibility to both Virginia Tech and to donors whose charitable aim to is to advance teaching, research, or outreach -- or to enrich the student experience overall. The 1872 Society was reintroduced in 2016, and now recognizes those who make leadership annual gifts of $5,000 or more.
1872 Society membership recognizes current-use contributions to any designations at Virginia Tech, including athletics. Members remain in the society as long as they continue to make gifts totaling $5,000 or more each fiscal year. The university's fiscal years run from July through June.
Within the 1872 Society there are three circles of distinction:
- The Grove Circle recognizes supporters who provide annual gifts of $25,000 or more.
- The Burruss Hall Circle recognizes supporters who give from $10,000 to $24,999.
- The Drillfield Circle recognizes those who give from $5,000 to $9,999.
